Medical and health services

Australian travellers in Greece, Bulgaria and Romania are not covered by the Australian national health scheme Medicare. Local health schemes do not cover Australian citizens whilst in these countries. It is therefore strongly recommended that travellers take out comprehensive private travel insurance prior to a proposed trip.

It should be noted that the general standard of public hospitals in the region is not the same as in Australia and that most private hospitals compare in general terms to a standard Australian public hospital.

In Greece, patients are often nursed and looked after by family members whilst nursing staff generally administer medication. It is expected that patients or their relatives make arrangement for a private nurse to attend to a patient on a 24-hour basis when necessary. Private nurses are often supplied by the hospital upon request but at your expense .

If you need the services of an English-speaking doctor, please contact your travel insurance for assistance as they may be able to refer you to a particular medical practitioner or clinic.
